On Thursday, August 5th, Karyne and Wesley left Mayne Island (where we were on a family vacation) to go to Sooke, BC, on Vancouver Island, to celebrate our 4th anniversary. We ate dinner at the Sooke Harbour House (Wesley says it was the most exquisite meal he has ever eaten) and stayed at a wonderful B&B that overlooked the Juan de Fuca Straight. At approximately 5h00 on Friday, Karyne began to feel some cramping, went to the bathroom and discovered that her water had broken. We called our midwife in Ottawa who advised us to immediately depart for the closest hospital, and then made the 45-minute drive to the Victoria General Hospital (the other drivers never moved quickly enough!). Karyne was admitted to the Labour & Delivery Unit, because she was having fairly constant contractions. The baby’s head was quite low, and Karyne was in early labour. That night we researched doulas in the Victoria area, found one we were comfortable with, and then met Jay later in the evening.

The first night Karyne was able to rest until 2h00 in the antepartum unit, at which point she was awoken to fairly strong contractions (these lasted until around noon). Unfortunately, Wesley was not allowed to stay the night, but was blessed to stayed with some close, university friends, the Thiessens, who live approximately 10-minutes from the hospital.

Day 2, Karyne moved back to the labour and delivery unit and continued to have fairly consistent contractions (of varying strength). During the afternoon we were able to see our precious Gabriel, Grandpa, and Oma, as well as Karyne’s mom and step-dad who flew out from Ottawa. In the evening, Karyne was moved back again to the antepartum unit because she was not advancing into active labour. There, we were able to put up a “sleeping, will call when awake” sign, which allowed Karyne some uninterrupted sleep for 5-hours (thankfully Wesley was allowed to stay). For the 2nd day in a row, Karyne was awoken at 2h00 to some VERY strong contractions, which continued throughout the night.  At approximately 9h00, the doctor examined her and discovered she had advanced to 5-cm dilation over night (which was VERY encouraging for Karyne).

Throughout Day 3, Karyne experienced stronger and more consistent contractions. To her surprise, she found standing up the most comfortable position to labour in. Of course, she also LOVED the hot shower! Karyne spent the later part of the morning and the early afternoon in pretty intense active labour.

At 16h28, after 2 ½ hours of pushing, Adrien was born! It truly was miraculous. 4lbs, 4.5ozs, with a full head of gorgeous brown hair. Karyne’s mom, our incredible Doula Jay, and I were there to receive Adrien into the world. He was so bright eyed and VERY cute!

After some initial cuddles and a couple of tears, Adrien and Wesley went to the neonatal ICU to allow Adrien to be assessed and to receive the necessary care. At this point, Karyne was recovering.  She was exhausted, but healthy. Overall, Adrien is also healthy, though he requires some assistance with breathing. It is expected that he will need to stay in care for a few weeks to ensure that he gets off to a healthy start.

As has been the case with all our family planning to date, it has always been about God’s speed -- and the result is our beloved little men.
